Child Brushing Teeth 2

Child's First Dental Visit

Our office, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend establishing a "Dental Home" for your child by one year of age.

Establishing a "dental home" for your child is essential to ensuring they receive comprehensive and continuous dental care. A dental home refers to a dental practice that provides ongoing, comprehensive dental care for children, from infancy through adolescence.

Having a dental home means that your child has a regular dentist who is familiar with their dental history and is able to provide personalized care tailored to their unique needs. This can help prevent dental problems from developing and catch any issues early on when they are easier to treat.

Furthermore, visiting the same dentist regularly can help your child build trust and feel comfortable with dental care. This can be especially important for children who may be nervous or anxious about visiting the dentist.

Overall, establishing a dental home for your child can help promote good oral health habits, prevent dental problems, and ensure that any issues are addressed promptly and effectively. It is recommended that parents establish a dental home for their child by their first birthday or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, whichever comes first.

Basic Dental Cleaning

Regular dental cleanings are essential for maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing dental problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Even if you brush and floss regularly, plaque and tartar can build up over time in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth, such as between your teeth and under your gumline. This buildup can lead to gum inflammation, bleeding, and eventually gum disease if left untreated.

Professional dental cleanings performed by a dental hygienist or dentist involve removing the built-up plaque and tartar from your teeth and gumline using specialized tools. This process, known as scaling and polishing, can also remove surface stains and improve the overall appearance of your teeth.

Regular dental cleanings can also help detect early signs of dental problems before they become more serious. During a cleaning, the dentist or hygienist will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer.

Overall, regular dental cleanings are an important part of maintaining good oral health and preventing more serious dental problems in the future. It is recommended to have a dental cleaning every 6 months, but your dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings based on your individual needs.

Sealants

Dental sealants are a type of preventive dental treatment that involves applying a thin, white coating to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These teeth have deep grooves and fissures that are difficult to clean with a toothbrush, making them susceptible to decay.

The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the tooth enamel from bacteria and acid attacks that can lead to decay. It is a painless and non-invasive procedure that typically takes only a few minutes to complete.

The process of applying dental sealants involves cleaning and drying the teeth, then applying an acidic solution to roughen the surface of the tooth enamel. The sealant is then painted onto the surface of the tooth and hardened with a special light. Once in place, the sealant can last for several years and can help prevent tooth decay.

Sealants are most commonly used in children and teenagers, as their teeth are more susceptible to decay. However, they can also be used in adults who have deep grooves and fissures in their teeth. It's important to note that sealants are not a substitute for regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups, but rather an additional measure to help maintain good oral health.

Mouth Guards

Mouth guards are protective devices worn over the teeth and gums to prevent injury to the mouth, teeth, and surrounding tissues during physical activities or while sleeping. Some of the benefits of wearing a mouth guard include:

  1. Preventing dental injuries: Mouth guards can help prevent dental injuries such as chipped or broken teeth, and even tooth loss. They can also protect the lips, tongue, and cheeks from cuts and bruises.

  2. Reducing the risk of concussions: Mouth guards can help reduce the risk of concussion by absorbing the impact of a blow to the jaw or head.

  3. Reducing the risk of jaw injuries: Mouth guards can help prevent jaw fractures and dislocations by cushioning the impact of a blow to the jaw.

  4. Improving sleep quality: Some mouth guards are designed to help prevent snoring and improve breathing during sleep, leading to better sleep quality.

  5. Improving athletic performance: Mouth guards can help athletes breathe better and speak more clearly, which can improve their performance on the field or court.

Overall, wearing a mouth guard is an effective way to protect your teeth, jaw, and mouth from injury, whether during sports or while sleeping.

Cosmetic Dental Bonding

Cosmetic dental bonding is a dental procedure that involves the application of a tooth-colored composite resin material to the surface of the teeth to improve their appearance. This technique is often used to address issues such as chipped, cracked, discolored, or misshapen teeth, as well as to close gaps between teeth.

During the bonding process, the dentist will first prepare the tooth by lightly etching its surface, which creates a rough surface that helps the composite resin adhere more effectively. They will then apply the resin material in layers, shaping and molding it to the desired shape and size. Once the composite material has been applied, the dentist will use a special light to harden and bond the material to the tooth.

The final step in the bonding process involves polishing and shaping the composite resin to ensure it blends seamlessly with the surrounding teeth, creating a natural-looking and aesthetically pleasing result. Cosmetic dental bonding is a relatively quick and non-invasive procedure that can often be completed in a single visit to the dentist. It is also a more affordable option than some other cosmetic dental treatments, such as veneers or crowns. However, the results of cosmetic bonding may not be as long-lasting as other options, and the material may be prone to staining or chipping over time.

Dental Veneers

Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers, are a popular, virtually painless cosmetic dentistry procedure that can address a wide variety of common dental concerns. Constructed from very thin, yet durable ceramic material, veneers are bonded to the front of each tooth to form a beautiful, natural looking smile.

Tooth- Colored Crowns

Dental crowns are a common dental restoration used to treat a variety of dental problems. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and function. Here are some benefits of dental crowns:

  1. Protection: Dental crowns provide protection to a weak or damaged tooth, preventing further damage or decay.

  2. Restoration of Function: Dental crowns restore the function of a damaged or weakened tooth, allowing it to function properly for biting and chewing.

  3. Improved Appearance: Dental crowns can be made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth, improving the appearance of your smile.

  4. Long-Lasting: Dental crowns are durable and can last for many years with proper care and maintenance.

  5. Versatility: Dental crowns can be used to treat a wide range of dental problems, including cracks, chips, fractures, and decay.

  6. Comfort: Dental crowns are custom-made to fit your teeth, providing a comfortable and natural fit.

Overall, dental crowns are a reliable and effective dental restoration that can help improve the health and appearance of your teeth.

Bridges

A dental bridge is a dental prosthetic device that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge is usually made up of one or more artificial teeth called pontics, which are anchored to the remaining natural teeth on either side of the gap, known as abutment teeth. The abutment teeth are usually fitted with dental crowns to provide support for the bridge.

Traditional bridges are usually made of porcelain or ceramic fused to a metal or zirconia framework.

Dental bridges can help restore the ability to chew and speak properly, prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of position, and improve the appearance of your smile. They require regular cleaning and maintenance, including brushing and flossing around the bridge and visiting the dentist for regular checkups.

Periodontal Treatments & Maintenance

Periodontal treatment is important for maintaining good oral health and preventing serious dental problems such as gum disease, tooth loss, and bone loss. Here are some reasons why periodontal treatment is so important:

  1. Prevents gum disease: Periodontal treatment can help prevent gum disease by removing plaque and tartar buildup that can lead to inflammation and infection.

  2. Stops tooth loss: Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, and periodontal treatment can prevent this from happening by addressing the underlying issues that cause gum disease.

  3. Improves overall health: Gum disease has been linked to other serious health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. By treating gum disease, periodontal treatment can help improve overall health.

  4. Promotes better oral hygiene: Periodontal treatment can help educate patients on better oral hygiene habits, including proper brushing and flossing techniques, which can help prevent future dental problems.

  5. Preserves bone structure: Gum disease can lead to bone loss in the jaw, which can result in a sunken appearance and difficulty eating and speaking. Periodontal treatment can help prevent bone loss and preserve the natural structure of the jaw.

In summary, periodontal treatment is crucial for maintaining good oral health and preventing serious dental problems. Regular check-ups with a dental professional, including professional cleaning and evaluation of the gum health, can help catch any issues early and prevent further complications.

Inlays & Onlays

Similar to dental fillings, inlays and onlays repair damage to your teeth caused by decay or wear. To do this, the damaged part of your tooth is removed, a fabrication (either inlay or onlay) is crafted in our dental lab, and is bonded to your tooth.

Stages-of-Root-Canal-Treatment-Steps.jpg

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. In order to save the tooth, the pulp (the living tissues inside the tooth), nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed and the resulting space is filled with special, medicated dental materials which restore the tooth to its full function. Having a root canal done on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise would die and have to be removed. Many patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is a solution, but what is not realized is that extracting (pulling) a tooth will ultimately be costly and can cause problems for adjacent teeth.

Simple and Surgical Extractions

There are instances when a tooth cannot be restored. Extensive decay as a result of chronic neglect or trauma that results in the inadvertent fracture of teeth are two leading causes for a tooth to be deemed non-salvageable.

There are many other causes, however.

Ultimately, under these circumstances, we may recommend the extraction or removal of these teeth as a means to improving the overall state of your oral health.

Orthodontic Treatment with Clear Aligners

Clear aligners, also known as invisible aligners, are a popular orthodontic treatment that can help straighten misaligned teeth and improve overall oral health. Here are some of the benefits of clear aligners:

  1. Appearance: One of the most significant advantages of clear aligners is their virtually invisible appearance. They are made of a clear, smooth plastic that blends in with the teeth, making them less noticeable than traditional braces.

  2. Comfort: Clear aligners are made of a smooth, flexible plastic that is much more comfortable than traditional metal braces. The aligners are custom-made to fit the patient's teeth, which ensures a comfortable and secure fit.

  3. Convenience: Clear aligners are removable, making it easy to eat, brush, and floss as usual. Unlike traditional braces, there are no brackets or wires that can trap food or make brushing and flossing difficult.

  4. Treatment time: Clear aligners can often straighten teeth more quickly than traditional braces, with some treatments lasting as little as six months. Treatment times vary based on the severity of the misalignment.

  5. Predictable results: Clear aligners are designed to apply consistent, gentle pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them into the correct position. This means that patients can expect predictable, consistent results throughout the course of treatment.

  6. Better oral health: Clear aligners can help improve overall oral health by making it easier to brush and floss properly. Misaligned teeth can make it difficult to clean between teeth, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems.

Overall, clear aligners offer many benefits for orthodontic treatment, including improved appearance, comfort, convenience, and oral health.

Lip & Tongue Frenectomy

Lip and tongue tie are two conditions that can affect the mouth's ability to function properly.

Lip tie refers to a condition where the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums is too thick or tight, limiting the lip's range of motion. This can make it difficult to breastfeed, eat, and speak. In severe cases, it can even affect dental health.

Tongue tie, on the other hand, occurs when the frenulum (the piece of tissue connecting the tongue to the bottom of the mouth) is too tight or thick. This can limit the tongue's movement, making it difficult to breastfeed, eat, and speak properly. In some cases, it can also lead to dental problems and affect speech development.

Both lip and tongue ties can be corrected through a simple procedure called a frenectomy, which involves cutting the affected tissue to release tension and allow for better range of motion.

There are several reasons why a lip or tongue tie might need to be fixed. Some of these reasons include:

  1. Breastfeeding difficulties: A lip or tongue tie can make it difficult for a baby to latch onto the breast and nurse effectively, leading to problems with weight gain and milk supply.

  2. Speech difficulties: A lip or tongue tie can interfere with the ability to form certain sounds, which can affect speech development in children.

  3. Dental problems: A lip or tongue tie can cause teeth to shift or become misaligned, leading to dental issues.

  4. Eating difficulties: A lip or tongue tie can make it difficult to eat certain foods or swallow properly.

  5. Social and emotional issues: A lip or tongue tie can affect a person's self-esteem and confidence, especially if it affects speech or dental health.
